hello, friends. it's been quite awhile. the only really big new things are that i am sort of dating someone now, i am going to lose my job at the end of june, baseball season is well under way(!!), and i have been listening to a lot of true norwegian black metal. old favorites plus new ones: fiend, black witchery and enslaved.

first of all, thanks to everyone for the computer advice. i am still feeling overwhelmed, but at least now i know where to start. i did go to circuit city and best buy recently just to look but circuit city was depressing and only had shitty computers and best buy i was too mad at because of their shitty return policy (unrelated, but they wouldn't let me return himym season one without a receipt, even to exchange it for something else in the store). so i would rather not buy one there, either.

anyway, i saw this tv survey-ish kind of thing and i know that you guys are all dying to know which television programs i have and have not seen, so here we go.

Empire Magazine has revealed its list of the 50 Greatest TV Shows ever. TV meme:

    1. Bold the shows you watch
    2. Italic the shows you've seen at least one episode of.
    3. Post your answers.
    4. Underline the shows if you've seen all of it.

    50. Quantum Leap - this was my mother's favorite show. we used to watch it every week together, what a great show.
    49. Prison Break- nope
    48. Veronica Mars - never saw the whole series. i liked it ok, though.
    47. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - i saw at least one episode of this show.
    46. Sex & The City - err... next question, please
    45. Farscape - never even heard of it
    44. Cracker - nope
    43. Star Trek - nope
    42. Only Fools and Horses - ?
    41. Band of Brothers - boy, i thought i watched a lot of tv...
    40. Life on Mars- no
    39. Monty Python's Flying Circus- didn't see all of them, but a lot of them.
    38. Curb Your Enthusiasm - best show OF ALL TIME!!!
    37. Star Trek: The Next Generation - no
    36. Father Ted - no
    35. Alias -  i saw one episode
    34. Frasier - i used to think this show was great, and watch it all the time. i am sort of embarassed now about that, but i cannot go back in time about it.
    33. CSI: Las Vegas - no
    32. Babylon 5 - no
    31. Deadwood - i have heard good things, but no.
    30. Dexter - ugh. this show is soooooo overrated. the acting is decent but the writing is so shitty it's almost unwatchable. i tried. the dialogue is laughable, especially the monologues
    29. ER - i have seen a few episodes with my family. they all like it a lot but i do not.
    28. Fawlty Towers - i have seen only one episode, but it was funny. the infamous "germans" episode.
    27. Six Feet Under - nope. i have heard good things, though. couldn't muster up enough interest to give it a try though
    26. Red Dwarf - no
    25. Futurama - yes! one of my favorite episode of any show is from futurama, where they have the "what if" machine.
    24. Twin Peaks - sadly, no. oh well.
    23. The Office - yes! i have seen and love the british and american versions.
    22. The Shield - nope
    21. Angel - meh
    20. Blackadder - enh
    19. Scrubs - dear god no
    18. Arrested Development - YES!!! if not for surb, this would be my favorite show of all time. funnily enough, i am re-watching the whole series right now. i am on season two. can only be described as a perfect television show
    17. South Park - blegh. i don't care for this show at all. not really as funny as everyone thinks. i chuckled a couple of times but it thinks it's edgier and funnier than it is. a tom cruise joke? way to push that envelope, guys.
    16. Doctor Who - no. although they were playing an old episode of the orginal series at a bar i was at once. there was no sound and i didn't really watch, so i won't count that.
    15. Heroes - we used to watch season one. don't anymore, though, nor do i miss it.
    14. Firefly - no
    13. Battlestar Galactica - no
    12. Family Guy - meh. i used to watch this religiously. it is getting better again but had a huge drop off in quality last season. again, edgy is not always funny.
    11. Seinfeld - yes!!!! not as good as curb, but definitely paved tha way and is amazing. it's taken for granted how groundbreaking it was.
    10. Spaced - no
    09. The X-Files - funnily enough, i have only seen one episode. but i've seen it three times. not even on purpose, either. every time x-files was on and i watched it, it was the same episode. plus i saw the first movie
    08. The Wire - i saw only the first episode but loved it. when i get netflix i have a long date with this series.
    07. Friends
    06. 24 - no.
    05. Lost - tried, found it boring
    04. The West Wing - no
    03. The Sopranos - nope. i've heard i would like it, but never have seen it. nor do i feel like i'm missing out.
    02. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - no
    01. The Simpsons- yes. i still try to watch it even though it hasn't been consistently funny since season 6. i don't know why i still watch it but i do. i missed some, so i can't say i've seen them all, but 99%

    advice
friends, i need a bit of advice. i am going to be buying a laptop very soon- perhaps even this weekend- but i know very little about computers. i know that i don't want to spend a lot of money, nor do i need a lot of bells and whistles. i also know that i want a pc, not a mac. i was going to get a dell but my mother- who knows less about computers than i do- said her computer tech person says that dells are not as good as hp's (i know the apostrophe shouldn't be there but without it it would look like hps and what's an hps).
it probably doesn't even matter i guess, because i really only need it for pretty much the internet and itunes.
but i figured i would ask if anyone likes one over the other or had any advice, since i have never actually even owned a computer before(!) and don't know much about them, like i said.
    so, thanks.

    jacques brel dvds part 574832
so now on amazon they have the three dvds, sold separately, directly from amazon itself. i will probably get them when i feel comfortable enough to spend the money, and return the other set. they are 25 bucks each so it would be a little more than i paid for the set i have but they would at least work, and i wouldn't have to buy a new dvd player (if there were a lot of other PAL/ region 1 dvds i wanted, it would be worth it to buy a new dvd player, but there aren't).
also, i could get the concert adieux olympia 1966 which is also 25 bucks and also sold directly from amazon. that might even be better anyway.
and this way if there was any mix up on the pal/region itr wouldn't be a pain in the ass to return them, i could do so directly to amazon.
it seems like there was something else i was going to say, but i forgot.

friends, i have been through hell and back trying to be able to watch my jacques brel dvds. i found a code online that supposedly worked (although some claimed it did not) for my dvd player to convert it to all regions. of course, it did not.
today i tried this new software which supposedly burns the dvds onto blanks without the code. i haven't tried it at home yet (i am still at work). i am not too optimistic, though. i wonder if it has to do with the fact that it is PAL (which may or may not be different from region 2). either way, i burned 2 of the 3 dvds today and i will burn the 3rd tomorrow if it does work.
i AM able to watch it on my computer here at work which gives me some hope. at least it's not a. a faulty disc and b. i guess i could always just watch them on my laptop when i get one.
also being this close gives me hope that there must be some way to watch them. cross your fingers, friends. i will need all the help i can get.

oh, man. so i FINALLY got the jacques brel 3 dvd box set that i wanted forever. i waited for a long time to order it on amazon.com for some reason. so long, in fact, that when i DID try to order it, it had been discontinued by the manufacturer! and all the copies on ebay were super expensive. then i saw that there were copies on amazon for pretty cheap from various sellers. so i bought one of those, and it finally came yesterday. AND IT WON'T PLAY IN MY DVD PLAYER! i re-looked on the product information page and there it is: "all regions". on the back of the dvd though it looks like it says pal only (it is in french so id on't know). i know it definitely won't play in my dvd player.
so either there are two different versions or amazon is wrong. i don't know. i know there are reviews from people in america on amazon, so either they have a multi-region dvd player or there is, in fact, a version for region 1. either way i am so bummed. i don't even care so much about the money (well, i do a little) as i do the fact that i have been wanting to own and watch this for so, so long and i still can't. blegh. i emailed the seller already and hopefully i will be able to return it but that puts me back to square one again. i wish they hadn't discontinued it. it seems like there would be enough people interested in mssr brel to keep making it.
i may even look into a multi-region dvd player if they're not too much or maybe trying to burn it onto a regular dvd or something? i don't know.
[edit- apparently there are "web sites" on the "internet" where you can look up how to change your dvd player into a multiregional dvd player using "codes." now i simply have to get my dvd player and a computer with the internet in the same room as each other and i'm home free]

in other news, i may have found my new local neighborhood bar for my new place. it's called "the summer place." the drinks are a touch more than whiskey thieves and also not as strong, but you can smoke inside (yet it's not smoky at all, nor does it smell smoky), they have a fireplace, and an awesome jukebox. i went there last night with steve and ashley. it was super fun. oh yeah, free pretzels, too. i guess snacks at bars aren't that unusual (i'd say they're probably more common than not, almost, these days), but they were good pretzels. i still like whiskey thieves and the edinburgh castle more, but it was a nice, close bar. there is still one even closer that i haven't tried yet.
oh yeah, and remember the fantasy playoff thing i was telling you about earlier? well, our team is in second place out of 23 teams!as long as we get at least 4th place, we will get some money. i am hoping we get 1st place, personally. we did lose peyton manning this weekend, but at least he had one good game. and we still have all our other players (except jason elam, our kicker). not too bad.

hello, friends. it's been a while. i have been busy.
so first and foremost, i live in a new apartment. it's on bush and taylor. it's a studio. it's nice. the heater makes a weird clanky noise and even makes noises when i turn it off which is very annoying. i guess i'll get used to it. that's pretty much my only complaint. i have slowly but surely getting things put together. there are still so many boxes. most of therm now i can't unpack without doing something else first. my boxes of books? i have to wait until i get a bookshelf. my dvds? i have to wait until i put up my dvd shelf. etc.
living alone is weird but i am getting used to it. yesterday i had virtually no contact with the outside world at all and i was fine. i was hungover as shit and slept most of the day.
i need to get a computer very badly. and the internet. i can only check email and stuff from work. also curtains and shelves. and a little table thing for me to throw knick-knacks and shit into.
the building and neighborhood are great. i DO miss a lot of the great food places i used to live by. i would have killed for thai house yesterday but felt too shitty to walk all that way. they may have been closed anyway, i don't know.

if you want to send me love letters, mixed tapes, regular letters, chick tracts, etc, my address is:
    887 bush st, apt 601
    sf ca 94108

i am at work today and totally do not mind at all. it is super dead and i am clearly doing no work. i do have a project but it is just faxing stuff now so i can let the fax machine do most of the heavy lifting on that one.

also, the other really exciting thing is about football. this is the most exciting time of the year for football, despite my beloved niners obviously not making it to the playoffs (again). i can't wait for the games. for posterity's sake, i think it's going to be the carolina panthers and the indidanapolis colts (maybe the steelers) in the superbowl.
my brother and i do a fantasy playoff team every year. the trick is, you cannot pick more than one player from the same team. so if you have the running back of the panthers, you cannot have the wide receiver, too. this exact examply cause much consternation from my brother and me. debating between taking deangelo williams or steve smith was haunting at best.
here is our final team (so you know who to root for):
    quarterback- peyton manning, ind
running backs- brandon jacobs, ny; brian westbrook, phi
wide receivers- steve smith, car; larry fitzgerald, az
    tight end- heath miller, pitt
    kick/punt returner- chris carr, tenn
    kicker- jason elam, atl
    defensive player- ed reed, bal

    happy new year everyone!

    why not...
    1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before? rode the matterhorn at disneyland. it was underwhelming.

    2. Did anyone close to you die? no

    3. What was the best thing you bought? hmm.. that's tough to say, really. i never really buy big expensive things, plus i have a bad memory. the first thing that came to mind was "it hurts too much to cry" by h.b. barnum, which is a terrific 7" record i bought on ebay

    4. Where did most of your money go? rent, food, records, and alcohol. not in that order. well, maybe in that order. no, not in that order.

    5. What did you get really, really, really excited about? i never get really, really, really excited about anything. greg and melanie's wedding was exciting. so was the trip to disneyland. i am also excited about seeing my family for christmas. but "really, really, really excited"? take out one or two of the reallys then we'll talk. oh, and tim lincecum winning the cy young and the football season starting, of course. actually, i DID get really, really, really excited about the football season starting.

    6. What song will always remind you of 2008? i don't know. i didn't really like a whole lot of the songs from this year, if i recall correctly.
[paper planes by m..i.a. it wasn't my favorite song of the year, mind, but it will remind me of 2008 whenever i hear it (so long as i remember what year it came out 10 years from now)-ed.]

    I. happier or sadder? probably about the same i guess

ii. thinner or fatter? about the same

    iii. richer or poorer? richer

    8. What was your favorite TV program? how i met your mother, the larry sanders show, curb your enthusiasm

    9. What was the best book you read this year? hmm.. i can't remember if i read the latest flashman book in 2007 or 2008. i sadly didn't really read a whole lot of books in 2008. the phil spector biography was good. "he's a rebel" was its name.

    10. What was your favorite film of this year? the only one i can think of is role models but there's no way that could have been my favorite of the entire year. what else was good? iron man? batman? neither would be my favorites either. hm..
[forgetting sarah marshall, pineapple express, king of kong (or was that 2007?), &c. -ed.]

    11. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? i turned 30 and i djed at my dj night at the edinburgh castle. it was fun.

    12. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? steady pussy

    13. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008? college student in the 50s

i think this weekend i am going to do what is called a pleaser parlay. this is like the parlay i mentioned before, only the spreads are crazy and the payouts are even crazier. if i pick three games and get them right, it is something like 200 dollar payout on a five dollar bet! i don't know what teams i am picking yet but i will be sure to let eveyone know when i decide.

in other news, we had our office party yesterday. it was sort of lame because it ws just in the kitchen but we had to scale down, especially since we laid a few people off recently. i guess having an extravagant party would have been a bit garish. it was still fun. the food was amazing and i had a shitload of champagne. plus we all got to leave early so i left at 3 and went to perry's where a lot of my coworkers were. i had about 4 drinks there which was fun. i ended up regrettably talking shit about one of my coworkers i don't like. i didn't start the conversation, but still, i feel weird/ bad about it today. after seeing how backstabby and whatnot the office can be, i feel dumb for having taken part. well, not dumb. but bad.
anyway, after that i took bart(!) to downtown and met up with the gang at tad's. that's two good meals in one day! we went to the tree in the union square and saw the kittens in macy's window. then we walked to whiskey thieves where i played pool with sara's roommate and had one last drink before coming home and going to bed.
even though i drank so much yesterday beginning at 12:30, i feel great today. eating food while/before drinking makes a huge difference.

i hope everyone else had great days, too.

    hoo boy!
rather than narrow down my parlay choices, i have actually ADDED MORE!
now i am also considering taking-
raiders +9.5 over broncos. i don't think they'll win, mind, i just think they can beat the spread.
kansas city +3 over buffalo. the chiefs have been playing tough and the bills have not. plus, it's in kansas city. this could be the final nail in the coffin that is buffalo's 2008 season.
detroit +8.5 over tampa bay. see above raiders/broncos game for explanation
baltimore -1 over philadelphia. baltimore should win this one. they barely lost to the giants last week, in new york. the eagles season is getting ugly.
st louis +8.5 over chicago. see above detroit/tampa bay game. these huge spreads are very inviting.
well, gentle readers, i have got some serious thinking to do! i'll let you all know what i finally decide, of course.

one of my new favorite things to do is bet on football games, legally, through my brother who lives in nevada. i like to do a parlay bet, where you bet on a certain amount of games. the more games you bet on, obviously, the more money you win. i never have won once but i still like to do it. last week i was only right in one of my four games. oops.
this week i am looking at:
49ers +10 over the cowboys. i think it will MAYBE be a close game and that is a huge spread. i don't know though, i would hate to lose because of the 49ers and i probably won't pick this game.
jacksonville -2.5 over minnesota. i will probably not bet on this one, either. i have had bad luck with the jaguars so far with betting. i like them so i usually pick them and they usually lose.
carolina +1 over atlanta. the only reason atlanta would maybe win is because that is where the game is. still, i think the panthers will win that game.
giants -3 over arizona. this seems like a tiny spread but then again, the cardinals are really good at home this year, so they could maybe upset the giants. i doubt it, though.
colts +3 over san diego. i cannot for the life of me begin to know why the colts are the underdogs in this game.
gren bay +2.5 over new orleans. i think the packers will probably win this one pretty easily. the only trick is that at this point the saints are pretty desperate and i think they need this win more. plus it is in new orleans. still, i think the packers are a better team.
that's it. i will probably narrow it down to four games but i don't know which ones yet. i will let you guys know once i decide.

    ray davies
    sara and erin-

i fucked up. i haven't bought my tickets yet for the show but melanie, greg and i are going to see jeff garlin at cobbs that same night. melanie already got our tickets and i didn't realize at the time that it was the same night as ray davies. so i can't go now.
sara if you still want to go you'll have to get your own ticket.
erin, i hope you either didn't get a ticket or can find someone else to go with (sara maybe). or if you want to go to cobb's to see jeff garlin with us you should do that. you too sara although he IS from curb your entusiasm so you may not like him because he is funny.
